Welcome to Blue Rag Gardens!
Blue Rag Gardens is located in the shadow of Old Rag.
After owning and operating Great Falls Greenhouses in
Northern Virginia in the 70s and 80s, we
brought our collections of peonies and daylilies to Madison
County in 1993. Perennials were the focus of Great Falls Greenhouses and
we had large display beds to show how things grew. Our peony bed was the
highlight and introduced many of our customers to the wide range of color
and types of flowers in the peony family. Our collections have "grown" since
then...so we have been selling plants and cut flowers from Madison County
since 1997.
Peonies
We have dozens of varieties of this beautiful Spring bloomer.
If you care to visit, our hours are all day, every day for the month of
May.
We cannot always be here, but we have mailboxes beside the beds with
price lists and pencils and you are welcome to wander through the
gardens and make your choices. We currently have about 135 cultivars of
peonies.
Many are only 2-3 plants so if you are interested in something not
listed on this site, e-mail or call and see if we have it.
Daylilies
No other plant will grow almost anywhere, under almost any soil condition
(acidic, sweet, dry, wet, stony, sandy), and still bloom. Color for small
areas, sweeping rows, steep banks, tall backgrounds, short borders, and even
extraterrestrial visitors!
There are literally thousands of named daylilies and hundreds added every
year. Our collection consists of older, sturdy standards, with good
landscaping qualities--good foliage, sturdy stems that stand above the
foliage, lots of flowers, and steady growth for a quickly grown clump. All
that for a little 5-10-10 and/or new compost each spring, a good clean-up in
the fall, and some TLC the first year.
Our Daylily gardens are open every day mid-June thru
mid-August. We cannot be here at all times, but there is a mailbox at the gate with
price and variety lists and order blanks for visitors. If you have questions, we are easily reached by phone or e-mail.
If time and conditions permit, we will dig your plants as you wait or we can
mail them to you. We dig plants and ship on Monday and Tuesday Priority U.S.
Mail.
Thanks,
Genie and Bill Cate
